Nearly every speaker decision eventually runs into this fork: buy a passive pair and a separate amplifier, or buy an active pair with the amplification already inside. It isn't a question of which sounds better — both approaches reach the highest level — but they lead to genuinely different systems, different costs and different upgrade paths.
Across the TrueScale catalog, roughly nine in ten speakers are passive — so passive is still the default of the hi-fi world. But the active side is where most of the recent engineering energy has gone. Here's what actually separates them.
The actual difference: where the amplifier sits
A passive speaker contains no amplification. One amplified signal arrives at its terminals, and a passive crossover inside — capacitors, inductors, resistors — splits it by frequency and routes each band to the right driver. One stereo amplifier drives both speakers.
An active (or powered) speaker splits the signal by frequency first, at line level, and then gives each driver its own dedicated amplifier channel. A three-way active speaker has three amplifiers inside it, per cabinet. It plugs into mains power and takes a line-level or digital input — no external amplifier at all.

Careful: 'active' is not the same as 'powered speaker with Bluetooth'
The word gets used loosely, and it's worth separating three things a shop might all call 'active':
- Truly active: the crossover is before the amplifiers and every driver has its own amp channel. This is the engineering case, and it's what studio monitors do.
- Powered but passively crossed: one internal amplifier feeds a conventional passive crossover. Convenient and often good, but it doesn't get the real active benefits.
- A primary-plus-secondary pair: one cabinet holds the electronics and feeds the other by cable, so only one speaker is really powered. Common at entry prices — check whether the second cabinet is passive.

What active does better
- Each driver gets exactly the power it needs. The designer chooses the amp for the tweeter and the amp for the woofer separately — no compromise amplifier trying to do both jobs.
- No power wasted in the crossover. A passive crossover filters an already-amplified signal, burning some of it as heat in resistors and coils. Active filtering happens before the power stage.
- Far more precise filtering, and DSP. Active crossovers can be steeper and more exact, and a DSP can also correct driver behaviour, time-align drivers and apply room correction — things a passive network simply cannot do.
- The system is finished and matched. No amplifier shopping, no impedance worries, no speaker cable. What the designer intended is what you hear.
This is why active designs dominate professional studios. ATC offers active versions across its range, and DSP-driven designs like those from Kii Audio and Dutch & Dutch use the electronics to shape dispersion in ways no passive speaker can — narrowing the pattern to cut wall reflections.
What passive does better
- You choose and change the amplifier. The amp is a large part of a system's character; with passive speakers you can voice the system to taste, and upgrade the amp later without replacing the speakers.
- Nothing to go obsolete or fail inside the cabinet. No mains supply, no DSP board, no streaming module that stops being supported. A good passive speaker can outlive several amplifiers — and be repaired decades later.
- Only one power cable, at the rack. Active speakers each need mains at the speaker position, which often means running power to both sides of the room.
- Far more choice, and a real second-hand market. Most speakers ever made are passive, so at any budget the passive options — new and used — vastly outnumber the active ones.
The money question
Compare total system cost, not sticker price. An active pair includes amplification, and often a DAC, streaming and a phono stage too — so a €1,500 active pair may be competing with €1,500 of passive speakers plus an amplifier and a streamer. Judged that way, active is usually the better value at lower budgets, and the gap narrows as you go up.
The counterweight is resale and longevity: passive gear holds value and stays serviceable longer, because there's less inside to age.
Hybrids: powered bass, passive top
A few flagships split the difference. The bass drivers get built-in amplification and DSP room correction, while the midrange and treble stay passive and are driven by your own amplifier. You get corrected, high-output bass — the hardest part for any room — while keeping the amplifier choice that passive owners care about.
MartinLogan uses this on its Masterpiece electrostatics (the panel is passive, the woofers powered with Anthem room correction) and Paradigm on its Founder 120H and Persona 9H. The catch: you still need to buy a good stereo amplifier, and find mains power at the speakers.
Which should you buy?
Lean active if you want one clean decision and a finished system, if your budget is modest and you'd rather it all go into the speakers, if space is tight or the room is difficult (DSP and cardioid designs help a lot), or if you value having streaming and TV inputs built in — as in the all-in-one systems from Cambridge Audio, Technics and Bang & Olufsen.
Lean passive if you already own an amplifier you like, if you enjoy choosing and swapping components, if you want the widest possible choice or a used bargain, or if you're buying something to keep for twenty years. One thing this choice does not decide is how the speaker sounds or how big it is. An active and a passive speaker of the same size and driver layout can be equally good; the difference is the shape of the system around them.
