American maker founded in 1957 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Henry Kloss, Malcolm Low and Josef Anton Hofmann — the three initials are the whole name. Kloss had just left Acoustic Research, where Edgar Villchur had shown that a sealed box could use the air trapped inside it as the woofer's spring, and KLH was built on that idea rather than on ports. The company made the Model Nine electrostatic panel and the Model Eight table radio before the name passed through decades of owners; David Kelley revived it in 2017 and it now runs from Noblesville, Indiana. The current Model range sticks to the original method literally — sealed cabinets throughout, baffles wider than they are deep, real wood veneer over MDF, a steel slant riser base in the box and a three-position tone switch on the back.
