Vivid Audio

South Africa· Founded in 2001

South African maker founded in 2001 in Durban by Philip Guttentag and Laurence Dickie, the engineer who had just designed the Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus. Vivid builds every drive unit itself, each one loaded by a tapered tube behind the diaphragm that absorbs the rear wave instead of letting it reflect back through the cone — the Nautilus idea, carried on and extended to the bass, where an unfilled folded tube damps the cabinet's internal resonances without choking the reflex port. The cabinets are vacuum-infused composite rather than wood, hand-built at Coherent Acoustic Systems in Pinetown, and painted in automotive colours. Two ranges: the sculptural Giya, whose longest tube has to curl out of the cabinet and over the top, and the more containable Kaya.

The catalog ranges from the Kaya S12 at 40.0 cm up to the Giya G1 Spirit at 160.0 cm — compare any two side by side at true scale.
