Brand
England· Founded in 1989
English maker founded in 1989 by Bob Surgeoner, who started with a hi-fi shop in Darlington and built speakers for it because he thought the compact ones on sale were compromised. The first was the Petite, developed over eighteen months by listening rather than measuring — a method rivals called trial and error — and shown at the 1990 Heathrow show to a reception good enough that the shop closed so the company could make speakers full time. They are still hand-built in Teesdale, County Durham. Two things recur across the range: ribbon and air-motion tweeters in place of domes, and isobaric bass, where a second driver works in a sealed chamber behind the first.
The catalog ranges from the Iota at 13.0 cm up to the Momentum J6 at 105.0 cm — compare any two side by side at true scale.
