The middle of the powered half of the range, and the point where the cabinet narrows: the 4.5-inch BDSS mid/basses of the DM40 rather than the 5.25s of the DM70 and DM80, in a box six centimetres shallower, around an 8-inch powered woofer and two 8-inch passive radiators on the same 180 W class-D amplifier as the DM70. Bipolar as ever — four mid/basses and two aluminium-oxide domes split front and back, with the 0/-6 dB rear tweeter switch — and 34 Hz at -3 dB without a subwoofer in the room. The width recorded here is 261 mm, not the 287 mm Definitive prints: the published figure repeats the DM80 and DM70's, while the company's own front photograph measures 261 mm, the same as the DM40, which is the cabinet these two share. $1,299 each.
